"ONCE UPON A WARDROBE" / BY PATTI CALLAHAN

If you are any age, and at all familiar with author C.S.Lewis and his Narnia adventures, this young adult book is definitely worth your while. Callahan, an English author, has written a host of books including several that introduce us to C.S.Lewis  himself, and to the special people in his life. Although most of the characters in this book are from the author's imagination, they meet and interact with Lewis and his brother. This book makes me want to check out more of hers - to give more insight into Lewis' life.

"ON A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND STARS" / BY ANDREA YARYURA CLARK

This novel takes place over two generations of family in Argentina. We are immersed in a mystery that takes us through some brutal history of the 1970s and then to present day. A wealthy diplomat and his wife and daughter travel from New York to their former home in Buenos Aires. During their stay, the 20-year-old daughter is confronted with indications that the earlier life of her parents, plus her own birth, were not as she had been led to believe. Complex in plot, but a fascinating story.

"IN ORDER TO LIVE" / BY YEONNI PARK

This is an amazing book by an amazing young woman. Born in repressive North Korea, most of Park's childhood was a nightmare of poverty and forced abandonment. After the disappearance of her sister, Yeonmi and her mother escape into China where she learns first-hand about the world of human trafficking. Eventually, they reach Mongolia and, from there, freedom in South Korea. Not an easy story to read, but a lesson in what the human body and soul can endure and still come out a winner.

"STARS OF ALABAMA" BY SEAN DIETRICH

This novel begins in depression/dust storm times, but you can't help but smile at the down-home characters our author has created - each with his or her individual eccentricities and problems. You'll find drifters and preachers, young men and old, women of the night and the purest of pure. With a plot that's convoluted, imaginative and worth many a chuckle, you follow our main characters as they inevitably make their way to the same eventual destination. It takes a while, but it all comes out all right in the end.

"LOST IN THE VALLEY OF DEATH" BY HARLEY RUSTAD

This book is a detailed account of the life, adventures and eventual disappearance, in 2016, of an American backpacker in the Himalayas. Justin Alexander Shetler was an inveterate adventurer who drove himself to exploring different parts of the globe, eventually reaching his goal of trekking in the far reaches of the Himalayas. It was here that he disappeared while on a spiritual journey. Some of his belongings were found, but his body was never recovered - was there foul play or did he "disappear" himself?

"LIGHT CHANGES EVERYTHING" BY NANCY E. TURNER

This is a Western story, with horses and cowboys but with an Eastern touch - all taking place at the turn of the century. Mary Pearl leaves her Arizona Territory ranching family to study photography at Wheaton College in Illinois. There she finds, and adapts to, a different sort of life. All too soon she is back home with more problems than solutions, but with the familiarity of family surrounding her. This plot has plenty of ups and downs and twists, but with the warmth of family love throughout.

"HOW TO FIND YOUR WAY HOME" BY KATY REGAN

Emily and her brother Stephen were very close while growing up, and then something happens that tears them apart for two decades before they meet again. By that time, she is a social worker, working with homeless people. And he is one of the homeless. Little by little, we find the answers to what happened to fracture their young lives. And, as the story unfolds, you'll also find yourself learning some amazing things about birds. A nice twist to a tale of love, estrangement and (finally) forgiveness.

"THE BALD EAGLE" / BY JACK E. DAVIS

This brand-new book is an engrossing treatise on our national symbol, taking us through the years of the bald eagle's up-and-down history in America. The eagle has never had an easy time here in America, where guns and DDT are only two of the many hazards that have plagued the existence of our national bird. This book is full of more information than you probably thought you wanted, but our author has spiced his comprehensive tome with plenty of anecdotes and personal stories that inspire.
